My second novel, Low Spirits, which I call my 'ghost noir,' was rejected at Warner Books last week. Foo! On the other hand, it was one of the more heartening rejections I've ever had, and a step in the right direction. I quote...
"Overall your writing is good, the sleazy L.A. setting was convincingly grimy, and I found the character of Bobby Cruikshanks to be intriguing."
The editor turned it down because the ghosts weren't ghost-y enough. "Little more than disembodied people." But since that was my conception from the beginning I don't know if I want to change it. Ah well, somewhere there will be an editor who won't mind that so much. The other heartening thing about the rejection was that it was prompt. They replied in three months. I have sent this manuscript out to two other publishers. One 4 years ago. One 3 years ago. I never heard a yes or no from either of them. Still waiting.
Hmmm. Now to figure out who to send it to next....

What was the first novel, and what's its status re: publication?
(Just curious)

I wrote two novels before I got the job at Black Library. Low Spirits was the second. The first one was called Jane Carver of Wor, a raunchy satire of old fashioned sword and raygun science fantasy, Edgar Rice Burroughs style. That's a pretty silly book and I don't know if I'll ever sell it, but I keep trying.
I have a lot more non-Black Library ideas that I'm working on, but the ones that pay the bills come first, so the others are on the back burner for now.

And yeah, that's a nice rejection.
Do you think He Who Has Ignored You For Years will actually pull your manuscript out from under his coffee cup, regardless of what he said?
